Selangor Exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah said for a start, the personnel involved in the incident, which occurred during the Pesta Gegar Klang 2016 event, had been ordered to go on leave until the end of the month.
“The staff were ordered to go on leave from yesterday until Jan 31 pending the outcome of the investigation report.
“We, the state government, view this matter seriously. Disciplinary and legal action will be taken against any personnel found to be negligent,” the Seri Kembangan assemblyman said in a statement released today.
The fireworks display, organised by the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) at the Pandamaran Sports Complek, went awry, with some of the big fireworks exploding before they could be launched into the sky. This resulted in injury to 10 adults and four children.
Ean Yong said based on preliminary investigations by MPK, the fireworks display for the event had not received any approval from the relevant authorities.
“The fireworks display was not one of the components of the show for the event.”
Yesterday, it was reported that MPK had started an internal investigation into the fireworks accident.
MPK president Mohamad Yasid Bidin said the probe team comprised two directors, one deputy director and administrative staff from departments not related to the event.
“We have set up a panel to investigate the incident. We expect to conclude the investigation in two weeks.”
Meanwhile, DAP Klang MP Charles Santiago said it was irresponsible of the organisers to engage an unlicensed company for the fireworks display.
“The Selangor government must therefore form an investigative team that can come up with safety recommendations and protocol to be used by all local authorities in future.”
It was earlier reported that MPK did not apply for the relevant permit to hold the fireworks display at the New Year Eve event.
