PETALING JAYA:
The financial difficulties faced by the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) have come to the attention of the Selangor Raja Muda.

Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin said he was worried about the crisis and has urged the FAS management to resign.

He said this would also give new faces a chance to lead FAS and revive its glory days.

“We need to inject new life into the Red Giants, a team that has a rich history. We have to take care of its dignity.

“Therefore, if the executive committee cannot improve the situation as soon as possible, I suggest they step down gracefully so that a more competent team can revive the ailing organisation.

“I suggest the FAS president introduce a new line-up which is free of politics, is based on merit, is energetic and, most importantly, can bring about a positive outcome for Selangor’s beloved football team,” he said in a statement.

FAS had threatened to withdraw from the 2017 Malaysian League (M-League) season starting on Jan 21 if it did not get RM15 million from the Selangor government.

Selangor is the third, after Kelantan and Perlis, to threaten to withdraw from the next season.

Up to this point, there has been no sign the state government will meet the demand for more money.

Tengku Amir said a drastic readjustment needed to be made in FAS to remove those who were hoping for subsidies to revive the team.

“Outdated management and people who are harping on subsidies need to be gotten rid of altogether.

“We as supporters need to believe and hold firm to the players we have.

“We have to admit that we have to go through difficulties and ups and downs over several years because of the actions of an irresponsible few, before the Red Giants can rise again,” he said.

Recently, a group of pro-opposition activists urged FAS to explain how it had used up the RM23 million allocated to them by the state government for this year.

“Otai Reformis supports Selangor Menteri Besar-cum-FAS president Azmin Ali’s stance to not give any more of the state’s money to FAS next season.

“Otai Reformis also agrees with Azmin that it is time for FAS to find its own funds,” said Otai Reformis chairperson Saari Sungib.
