In the letter posted on Anis’ Facebook page, Dr Mahathir said he was disturbed by the disciplinary action by Universiti Malaya against her for her involvement in the #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 (MO1) rally.
“By right, the most famous university in the country should be supporting your courage and concern for the future of this country and its people over MO1’s actions,” said Dr Mahathir, in relation to MO1. Federal minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan has said that MO1 is Prime Minister Najib Razak.
“You are not alone in having these concerns. In my twilight age, I might escape the consequences of MO1’s actions but I cannot stand by and allow MO1 to continue with his actions.”
He voiced hope that Anis would be strong in facing the disciplinary actions she has faced, adding that a struggle without sacrifice was no struggle at all.
Dr Mahathir added he hoped other youth would follow Anis’ example and that UM would realise her involvement in the rally was out of her concern for the nation’s future, rather than a disciplinary issue.
Last week, Anis was slapped with a six-month suspension from Universiti Malaya and a RM400 fine for her involvement in the rally. Anis said that the suspension and fine would not silence her.
The #TangkapMO1 rally was organised by a coalition of student and youth groups calling for the arrest of the MO1 named in the United States’ Department of Justice’s recent civil suit linked to state fund 1MDB.
