State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Ismail Othman said the decision was made after taking into account the facilities available in the area, such as the Melaka Sentral Terminal.
He said based on a preliminary report on the Pasar Besar Melaka by the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram), the damage to the present building was mostly due to technical faults.
“The new market will be built once we receive Ikram’s full report and after action has been taken against the contractor concerned,” he added.
He said the new market would be equipped with modern facilities, and traders operating at the Pasar Besar Melaka at present, would be relocated to the new building.
