KUALA LUMPUR: The government will consider the chemical castration of paedophiles, according to the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Rohani Abdul Karim.

“We will study its effectiveness,” she told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

“If it is suitable, what’s wrong with implementing it? What they do to children is so much worse.”

Chemical castration is a process by which a man is neutered with the injection of female hormones.

Rohani was responding to several MPs who had asked whether the ministry would consider introducing legislation allowing for the chemical castration of child rapists and other sex offenders.

Outrage over paedophilia gripped the nation after reports surfaced earlier this year that British paedophile Richard Huckle had been sexually abusing Malaysian children.

Huckle had been preying on children in the country for nearly nine years from 2006. He allegedly abused close to 200 children aged between six months and 12 years.

A British court has since sentenced him to 22 life sentences.
