Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) said Putrajaya should emulate Indonesia.
“Chemically castrating these offenders would lower their testosterone level and their sex drive,” she said when debating amendments to the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
In 2016, Indonesian president Joko Widodo authorised chemical castration for convicted child sex offenders in response to a brutal gang rape and murder of a 14-year old girl in Sumatra.
Mas Ermieyati, a former deputy law minister, also proposed that the maximum jail term under the Act be increased to 30 years, and for convicts to be caned. The current maximum term of 20 years was insufficient, she said.
“When pictures are taken and videos recorded, and then uploaded onto social media, there will be short-term and long-term impact on the child victims. Such material will be online even when these victims are adults,” she said.
