PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan is set to collaborate with various NGOs to protest the latest redelineation exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC), says coalition Chief Secretary Saifuddin Abdullah.

At a press conference today at PKR’s headquarters, Saifuddin revealed that the collaboration would also include the Bar Council and electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0

“We will work together with other bodies that will take similar action as us,” he said, adding that the Bar Council was in the midst of preparing a guide for the people to state their objections.

Present today was Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, DAP’s Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.

The former Temerloh lawmaker revealed that the Bar Council was prepared to take “appropriate” legal action against the EC.

Saifuddin said all MPs from the Opposition coalition will be asked to write individually to the EC to request maps of the affected areas as these were not easily accessible to the public now.

“Getting the map is an issue. Unless you have the map with you, it’s hard to object to the redelineation exercise objectively.”

The former Umno member revealed there could be a possibility that the Penang and Selangor Governments would object to the redelineation exercise.

PH, he said, will also suggest to local councils to make objections to the latest exercise.

Saifuddin slammed the redelineation exercise as unconstitutional and one-sided, claiming it will only benefit Barisan Nasional.

He said that if one were to look at the history of elections, every time after a redelineation exercise was carried out, “BN wins or wins big”.

“That’s the fact and we still see it being repeated blatantly.”

Khalid said redelineation was a normal procedure in a democratic country and urged the EC to “use this opportunity to regain the people’s confidence in the commission as a free body”.

“The purpose of the EC is for the people to choose their desired government to lead the country.

“And if the EC acts as a body to determine BN’s victory, then they have betrayed the trust given by the people.”

Sim said the redelineation exercise was an insult to Parliament, adding that it betrayed the consensus made by BN and the Opposition in the Parliament Select Committee 2012 on electoral reforms.

“Even MCA and Gerakan are objecting to the redelineation exercise. We demand that EC stop the redelineation exercise and go back to the basis of bi-partisanship.”

Saifuddin said Pakatan Harapan would organise roadshows to educate the people on putting forward their objections against the redelineation.

He said they will mobilise members for the fifth Bersih 2.0 rally on Nov 19.
