PETALING JAYA:
The LRT service on the Kelana Jaya line was disrupted this morning over a glitch in the signalling and communication system, causing thousands of commuters to be stranded.

The glitch forced Rapid KL to “power down the line at several stations” in order to correct the problem, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, the operator of the LRT services said in a statement.

“We had glitches in the signalling and communication system between the Ampang Park and Dang Wangi stations and had to power down the line at several stations in the city centre for us to attend to the situation,” Kelana Jaya LRT Line Chief Operating Officer Ismail Abdullah said.

“Trains on the Kelana Jaya Line were shuttling between Putra Heights and Dang Wangi and between Gombak and Ampang Park.

“Buses were also deployed to ferry customers in need of alternate travel services from the Sri Rampai LRT station to the city centre and between KLCC and the city centre.”

A tweet sent out by MyRapid KL, the official Rapid KL Twitter account, earlier this morning stated that the delay occurred from Masjid Jamek to Ampang Park and that shuttle buses from Sri Rampai to Masjid Jamek were provided for affected commuters.

“KJ Line: More shuttle trains deployed between Dang Wangi-Ampang Park-Setiawangsa-Wangsa Maju-Gombak. Follow updates,” it added in a series of tweets.

Power at stations between Setiawangsa to Damai was fully restored as of 8.50am, but the team is still working to “power up the entire line”, Ismail said.

The disruption to LRT services plus the heavy rain before and during the morning rush hour had caused massive traffic jams across the Klang Valley.

Commuters hoping to avoid the traffic jams went to the LRT stations only to see it packed with more commuters stranded as a result of the disruption in service.

Rapid KL said repair work is under way to resume the service between Ampang Park and Dang Wangi safely.

“We wish to extend our sincere apologies to our customers whose travel were interrupted by the glitches. Commuters who have entered the paid area of the stations may seek refund from our Customer Service Offices,” Ismail said.
