PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry wants people to step forward and report those whom they suspect are abusing their Medical Certificates (MC) as well as those selling fake ones, The Sun Daily reported today.

Health Ministry Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry would investigate incidences of abuse in the use or issuance of MCs and take action in line with the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998.

“Any employer, head of department or individual who suspects an abuse of MCs has taken place should lodge a police report so investigations can be initiated.

“Similarly, police reports should also be lodged against those selling fake MCs, be it through syndicates or online,” Noor Hisham was quoted as saying by the news portal.

In the case of licensed practitioners, private clinics or private hospitals which sell MCs, Noor Hisham said complaints should also be lodged with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and Health Ministry.

This he said could be done via email, with complainants making sure to state the address of the offending clinic or hospital.

According to The Sun Daily, Noor Hisham said the ministry was actively monitoring this issue, and added that the selling of fake MCs had negative implications on the nation’s productivity.

Earlier this year, Negeri Sembilan police busted a fake MC syndicate in Seremban and arrested nine people to assist with investigations, including four civil servants.

Last year, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said producing fake MCs was an offence under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which prohibits the submission of claims documents which contain false details.
