PETALING JAYA:
PKR Communications Director Fahmi Fadzil said the MCA’s refusal to apologise to PKR President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for levelling baseless claims against her over the Kajang chapel demolition fiasco is shameful.

“This also indicates that they have not learnt from their mistakes,” he told FMT.

Fahmi was asked to comment on MCA Religious Harmony Deputy Chairman Ng Chok Sin’s insistence that Wan Azizah was to blame for the fiasco involving the demolition of the chapel in Kajang, despite the Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur clarifying that it had earlier given its blessing for the building to be torn down.

Ng had, in a statement a few days ago, pointed out that residents of the former Brehma Estate had chased away the Kajang Municipal Council contractors from the site.

This, he argued, meant that the general public was unaware that the demolition of the chapel had been given the green light and that sufficient notice ought to be given to the public by public officers in the know, including the state elected representative concerned.

Wan Azizah is the Kajang assemblywoman.

Fahmi said the MCA could have easily investigated the facts before training its guns on PKR, its president, the Kajang municipal council, or the Selangor State Government.

He urged the Chinese-based party to apologise over the matter, saying that Kajang residents would expect such a gesture.

“If you make a mistake, you should own up to it.”

Earlier last week, Tamil dailies reported that a Kajang municipal council contractor outraged the residents of the former Brehma Estate when his workers tried to tear down a chapel at night without anyone’s knowledge. This led to Ng questioning as to why the Kajang Municipal Council and Wan Azizah had intended for the chapel to be demolished at night.

DAP lawmaker Ong Kian Ming then came to her defence, demanding the MCA apologise to Wan Azizah for making “baseless accusations”, following a statement from KL Archbishop Julian Leow that he had given the nod for the demolition to proceed.

However, Ng fired back at the Serdang lawmaker, pointing out that Wan Azizah should have issued an immediate clarification when the incident was first reported.
