PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian actor and producer Afdlin Shauki says he is boycotting this year’s Festival Filem Malaysia (FFM) over the segregation enforced in some of the major categories.

Writing on his Facebook page last night, Afdlin expressed his regret, apologising to his fans and said that he would be boycotting the 28th edition of FFM.

He wrote: “All the best to the nominees and those who are not chosen because of stupidity.

“Congratulations for making Malaysia proud with your work!”

Afdlin also stated that Malaysians, regardless of their race, should truly be appreciated for their work as a Malaysian product.

“FFM committee, good luck to you all, too,” Afdlin said on his Facebook page.

This year’s FFM nominations attracted controversy because the Best Movie award was split into two categories, namely Bahasa Malaysia and non-Bahasa Malaysia.

Critically acclaimed movies such as “Ola Bola” by Chiu Keng Guan and “Jagat” by Shanjhey Kumar were grouped into the non-Bahasa Malaysia categories.

Chiu and Shanjhey were also nominated in the Best non-Bahasa Malaysia Director category.

The FFM will be held on Sept 3 at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
