The Sun quoted federal police Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) director Commissioner Mortadza Nazarene as saying that they have wrapped up investigations into the case and have received orders from the Attorney-General’s Chambers to charge the officers with criminal breach of trust.
Mortadza however, did not specify the date the men are to be charged.
The daily had reported last November that money, meant for various repairs and replacement of fire doors and air conditioning systems at the old office block of the federal police headquarters , was siphoned off, via doctored papers carrying forged signatures and duplicated rubber stamps of two police directors and a Public Works Department civil engineer.
This was to hoodwink the Treasury into releasing payments for non-existent tenders.
The discrepancies were uncovered in June last year during an internal audit, which revealed that payments were recorded as disbursed to individuals who allegedly posed as contractors undertaking the job.
A building contractor and six senior and rank-and-file police personnel were arrested in the operation that followed.
