PETALING JAYA:
More parking lots are on the cards for motorists using the Light Rail Transit (LRT) network, a move to convince private car owners to leave their cars behind and use the public transport.

Rail operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad revealed that it was working closely with its partners to increase parking bays to more than 4,000 at the newly-extended Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya LRT stations, Malay Mail Online reported.

Prasarana’s media affairs head Azhar Ghazali said it was hoping to boost ridership from the current 21 per cent to 40 per cent by 2030.

“Either they leave their cars at home or drive to the nearest park-and-ride facility and use our LRT or the KTM Komuter,” he said. .

Motorists will be charged RM4 per entry after the first month of operations, Azhar was reported as saying by the online portal.

There are seven new stations along the Sri Petaling LRT line that come with parking bays. Awan Besar has 184 bays, Muhibbah (254), Kinrara BK5 (188), IOI Puchong Jaya (464), Pusat Bandar Puchong (120), Taman Perindustrian Puchong (347) and Putra Heights (452).

As for the Kelana Jaya LRT line, five of its new stations have parking lots: Ara Damansara (743), Glenmarie (558), USJ 21 (562), Alam Megah (206) and Subang Alam (109).

However, he said not all of the 23 new stations came with parking facilities, as there were stations where Prasarana did not have excess to land to develop parking areas, he explained.

In areas with no access to land, Azhar said Prasarana would work with property developers to develop mixed commercial areas with parking facilities within the development, and with local authorities to develop more parking areas. For instance, the parking near Asia Jaya, is developed by MBPJ.

Feeder bus services are provided by the company to connect commuters to LRT stations.

Prasarana is projecting an additional 300,000 passengers per day with the extension of the Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya line, on top of the existing 420,000 riders for these two lines before they were extended and for the Ampang LRT line.

Prasarana group communications and strategic marketing head Lim Jin Aun was reported as saying that the extended LRT lines have to date contributed an additional 23,000 in daily ridership numbers.
