‘Is the snap polls plan to find a proxy for Guan Eng?’

Penang Umno Chief Zainal Abidin Osman says instead of planning to hold a snap election, Lim Guan Eng should concentrate his efforts on resolving the island’s perennial flood problems.

GEORGE TOWN:
Penang Umno Chief Zainal Abidin Osman has questioned if the DAP-led state government is hell bent on holding snap polls in order to find a proxy for its Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in the event that the DAP leader is convicted of corruption.

“Is the real motive for the snap polls to place a proxy or a Lim family member in power to ensure the family can carry on leading the state government?”

Zainal also alleged DAP was clutching at straws with its plan to hold snap polls without realising its serious effects when they ought to be using the remaining two years to the next polls to resolve the issue of perennial flooding in Penang.

He claimed the state government had promised to resolve this issue in past general elections but had so far done nothing about it.

Another issue Zainal warned about was the likelihood of other states following Lim’s plan to hold snap polls, thereby relegating the nation to a cycle of “endless election campaigns.”

“However, if the snap polls are held, Umno is ready to enter into ‘election mode’. Anyhow, the general election is just 24 months away.”

Yesterday, Lim said the snap polls were being discussed in a bid to restore the “democratic spirit” of the people due to systemic abuses by the Federal Government and the political donation scandal.

Zainal also criticised DAP’s decision to shelve its Central Executive Committee election, saying that party members had the right to decide for themselves if they wanted a secretary-general (Lim) who had been charged with corruption or not.
