PETALING JAYA:
A 20-year-old Malaysian working as a cleaner in Singapore was jailed a year for causing grievous injury to his fiancee’s cousin.

Mohammed Hafian Suaily kicked Norhayati Mohammad Abas, 24, near her spine while she was sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the living room at a unit in Jalan Minyak, off Chin Swee Road, about 4am on Feb 6 this year.

When she sat up, he kicked her near her left eye area once, causing her to have blurred vision and a bleeding nose.

Singapore Straits Times reported that Deputy Public Prosecutor Michelle Lu said Hafian told her that if his fiancee did not return in an hour’s time, she would “die in his hands.”

Hafian then left to look for his 18-year-old fiancee. All three were then living together.

Norhayati sought help from her uncle and was hospitalised for her injuries.

Besides bleeding in the left eye, she had multiple facial fractures.

The court ordered Hafian to pay compensation of S$688 to the victim after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt.

The young man was angry with Norhayati for allegedly spreading rumours about him and his fiancee’s family.

He was drunk and had quarrelled with his fiancee before the assault.

District Judge Low Wee Ping said what Hafian did was “very cruel” and noted his victim had not fully recovered, especially her vision.
