Launching the Kelana Jaya and Ampang LRT extension projects today, he said there was under-investment and an “uncoordinated system owned by too many parties”, creating a vacuum in public transport, Malaysiakini reported today.
Najib said the LRT idea was mooted in 2009 after a series of brainstorming sessions with the Performance Management Unit (Pemandu) to connect densely-populated areas.
He said the public transport system was unable to meet the demands of a growing city, causing traffic congestion.
Najib said he set public transport as a high priority under the National Key Results Area and was happy Prasarana had completed the RM8 billion project, despite going through three chief executive officers.
He expected the project to benefit millions of new commuters living around the Klang Valley and said it was another pledge fulfilled for the benefit of the people by the government.
