Amanah’s news portal Malaysia Dateline reported that Muhyiddin, who was accompanied by members of the Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM), was there to show his support to Amanah candidate Azhar Abdul Shukor.
The suspended Umno No 2 was seen mingling with traders and members of the public at the Pasir Panjang market about 9.30am.
The portal said Muhyiddin’s presence there was an indication that Amanah could win the seat.
“Muhyiddin would not campaign for candidates he doesn’t see having a chance of winning, especially in the last hours before the polls,” said the report, quoting a political analyst.
However, a GKCM member, when contacted by FMT, denied Muhyiddin was there to show support for Azhar.
Muhyiddin’s visit comes just a day after he issued a denial to an article published on website Malaysia Today, run by blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, which implicated the former in a scandal with a married woman.
Muhyiddin said these accusations were baseless and malicious.
Former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had previously appeared in both Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, and openly voiced his support for Amanah candidates contesting in both seats.
