SUNGAI BESAR:
Supporters of Barisan Nasional, PAS and Parti Amanah Negara began gathering in this town as early as 7am today in fine weather in preparation for the nomination of candidates for the Sungai Besar parliamentary by-election.

They grouped at the locations designated for the respective contesting parties, waiting for the delegations of the candidates which would march towards the nomination centre at Dewan Seri Bernam.

The nomination period is from 9am to 10am.

About 1,000 police have been deployed around the nomination centre and along several roads which had been closed at 5am to facilitate the nomination process.

More than 70 reporters from various news organisations are present to cover the nomination, and they had to walk for over 500 metres to the nomination centre due to the closed roads.

Separate routes to the nomination centre have been arranged for the contesting parties to avert any untoward incidents.

Polling will be held on June 18.

The by-election is caused by the death of the MP, Noriah Kasnon, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.

Five other people also died in the accident, one of them being Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad. A by-election to fill his seat is being held simultaneously.
