KUALA LUMPUR:
PAS’s candidates for the June 18 twin by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar will be announced this Friday, said the party’s Vice-President Idris Ahmad.

“We will announce our candidates on May 27. As for the location, we will inform (the public) later,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

Nominations for the by-elections will take place on June 5. The by-elections follow the deaths of its parliamentarians in a helicopter crash earlier this month.

PAS has already declared it would contest in the two seats, previously held by Umno, sparking the possibility of a multi-cornered fight.

PKR and Amanah are also vying for the seats.

Yesterday, Amanah Communications Director Khalid Samad said the PAS splinter group was ready to contest both seats to ease the tension between PKR and the Islamist party.

When asked to comment on Khalid’s statement, Idris likened the situation to that of a dispute involving a married couple.

“It’s like a conflict between husband and wife. If they are having problems, why should the neighbours interfere and decide if they should get a divorce or not?

“It’s inaccurate. Do they (Amanah) want to fight the government or the Opposition? We want to fight BN.”

He also insisted that the two seats left vacant following the deaths of Sungai Besar MP Noriah Kasnon and Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad belonged to PAS.

No matter who Pakatan Harapan decides to field, PAS would not back down, he added.

Barisan Nasional won the seats in the last general election, beating PAS with a slim majority of 399 in Sungai Besar and 1,082 in Kuala Kangsar.
