Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said police were still investigating the matter and that the guilty party would be charged in court.
“Let us investigate the matter. Safee was not driving the car at the time, but someone else, and that person has been detained,” he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
Khalid added the public should not assume the pistol belonged to Safee, who plays for Johor Darul Takzim (JDT).
Previously, Berita Harian Online reported that a pistol and 30 bullets were found in Safee’s four-wheel drive at a roadblock near Kempas, Johor, on Sunday afternoon.
The vehicle was driven by a car accessories shop owner.
Police officers searching the vehicle found the pistol and bullets in a yellow bag in the backseat of the vehicle.
Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd confirmed the 34-year old suspect had no link to Safee.
Wan Ahmad said Safee had sent his vehicle to the suspect’s car accessories shop to be modified last week and wanted to pick it up after JDT’s FA Cup Final against Selangor PKNS in a match played at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.
