Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) Chairman Yaacob Md Sam said at present police were tasked with protecting whistle-blowers.
“A body that is being reported on is also protecting the person revealing information on them.”
He said EAIC had mooted an independent body to protect any whistle-blower.
Yaacob said there were problems in protecting the identity of any whistle-blower in the police force as it was easy to zoom in on the identity of a policeman.
“For instance, if there are rampant cases of illegal gambling in an area, people may not want to come forward to complain.”
The matter was brought up by Centre to Combat Corruption & Cronyism (C4) Founding Director Cynthia Gabriel.
She said there was a need to look at ways to look into the privacy of whistle-blowers, especially if the person was a policeman.
Lawyers for Liberty’s Executive Director Eric Paulsen brought up the importance of having an independent and fair pathologist.
He said the role of pathologists was crucial in cases of police custody deaths.
“Families of victims need to know the real reason for the death of a person – if it was due to natural causes or police torture.”
