PETALING JAYA:
A controversial car street race set to take place in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre is now in limbo, as the organiser and local authority have yet to strike an agreement.

According to racing website Speedcafe.com, no agreement has been reached by the relevant parties so far about the race, reportedly named KL City 400 Supercar Extravaganza due to ongoing legal action involving Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The report said a DBKL affidavit sighted by The Edge Malaysia revealed no fresh agreement to host such an event would be made while legal action with the race’s former organiser GT Global was ongoing.

Prior to this, it was reported that the warring shareholders of GT Global had taken legal action against DBKL and that a new organiser, City Motorsports had stepped in as a replacement.

The legal action was initiated by GT Global’s directors who are alleging that several parties including City Motorsports and DBKL were conspiring to wrest control of the company and its AUD$200 million (RM592 million) contract for the event.

V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton told the website that the company was working with City Motorsports chief Faizal Moulana to ensure the event went ahead.

“The legal activity is beyond our control and we just have to let that run its course.

“Everyone has read reports that are from one side of the ledger, from the aggrieved party, and we’ve got to look at our due diligence and rely on the promoter.”

Warburton said if there were any changes, they would advise their teams and fans as soon as possible, and that at present, the race was still on.

Last month, FMT reported that a GT Global shareholder had filed an application for a court injunction to stop City Motorsports from holding any street race in the city.

DBKL had also said previously it would not grant approval for any street car race in the city if the organisers of the event could not come up with the funds for it.

The statement was made amid reports that the KL City 400 Supercar Extravaganza had already been scheduled to take place.
