PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian caught last year for cultivating cannabis in Canberra, Australia, is facing deportation to after being released early from jail due to good behaviour.

The Canberra Times reported that Kam Mei Ng, 37, was arrested with five others by police during a raid in June last year.

The raiding team checked six houses and seized more than 900 cannabis plants from rental properties across the territory. Police found 116 plants and a hydrophonic set-up in her property alone.

Police also discovered an irrigation pump system in the six rooms the plants were found in, as well as a manual on growing cannabis.

Kam, who had no prior criminal record, told the court that she was not aware that growing the plants was wrong. She had worked as a cleaner prior to the arrest.

Kam was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. However, she is to be released early for good behaviour.

She is likely to be placed in the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney before being deported back here, said the report.

She stands a slim chance of staying in Australia if she successfully applies for an extension.
