Bangladeshi man jailed 6 months over 5 molest cases

The offences occurred between April 10 and April 25 at various LRT stations in Kuala Lumpur.

A Bangladeshi man was sentenced to six months’ jail and fined RM15,100 by the magistrates’ court here after pleading guilty to using criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of five women, including a German national.

Romjan Ali, a 41-year-old construction worker, entered guilty pleas before several magistrates in separate proceedings.

The offences occurred between April 10 and April 25 at various LRT stations in Kuala Lumpur.

Before magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan, he pleaded guilty to using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a 25-year-old woman at about 8.30am on April 10 near the Chan Sow Lin LRT station. Case facts stated that he hugged the victim from behind while she was walking.

She screamed and fell while attempting to break free, and claimed she later saw the accused masturbating. For this offence, he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and fined RM3,000, in default a further three months’ jail.

Before magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin, Romjan admitted to molesting a 21-year-old German woman at a pedestrian walkway near the Chan Sow Lin LRT station at about 12.40pm on April 11. He was sentenced to three weeks’ jail and fined RM3,500, in default four months’ imprisonment.

In a separate court before magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri, Romjan pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of a 28-year-old woman on a train travelling from the Taman Midah MRT station to the Muzium Negara MRT station on April 15.

He was accused of standing in a crowded train facing the victim and groping her genital area. He was sentenced to six months’ jail for the offence.

Before magistrate Farah Nabihah Dan, Romjan admitted to another offence involving a 28-year-old woman on a train at the Maluri MRT station at about 8am on April 22, where he was found to have groped the victim from behind. He was fined RM5,000, in default three months’ jail.

In the same court, he also pleaded guilty to a similar offence involving a 24-year-old woman on an escalator at the Maluri MRT station at about 4.45pm on April 25. For this charge, he was fined RM3,600, in default six months’ imprisonment.

All charges were framed under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine, whipping or any two of these, upon conviction

All jail terms were ordered to run concurrently.

Deputy public prosecutors Hench Goh, Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal, Nur Farhana Poad, as well as prosecuting officers M Alli Nangai and M Naresh Kumar appeared for the prosecution. Lawyer T Chandrasegaran represented Romjan.

Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said a 41-year-old man was arrested at the Maluri MRT station at 11.45am on Monday and was charged today with sexually assaulting five women at train stations in the capital city.
