Adenan becoming more authoritarian, says PKR

PKR Vice-President Dr Xavier Jeyakumar says no elected representative should be warned about behaving themselves once in Sarawak.

KUCHING: Adenan Satem’s warning to Opposition leaders to behave themselves as long as they are in Sarawak, shows just how much “more authoritarian in nature” the chief minister has become, says PKR Vice-President Dr Xavier Jeyakumar.

“This is an uncalled for statement by Adenan towards leaders from the peninsula who are going to be here (Sarawak) to bring about democratic change to the state.

“I don’t understand the word ‘behave’ as this is an inappropriate statement against (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng and (DAP supremo) Lim Kit Siang.

“There shouldn’t be any threat of ban from entering Sarawak against any elected representative either,” Jeyakumar said during a press conference here today.

On Tuesday, Adenan reminded Opposition leaders from the peninsula to behave themselves or risk deportation, adding that would-be visitors to Sarawak, as well as politicians and activists, should also “behave” if they wanted to enter the state.

To date, more than 40 Opposition leaders and activists have been barred from entering. This also included leaders and activists from the government’s side.

“We have never read anything like this in any part of the world, where you are not allowed to enter a state in your own country.

“Did you advise (Prime Minister) Najib Razak like how you advised Guan Eng and Kit Siang? Can you give us a list of ministers and deputy ministers who are barred from coming to Sarawak?” Jeyakumar asked.

Meanwhile, when asked about the public spat between PKR and DAP over six overlapping seats, Jeyakumar admitted that the party felt bad that such a thing had happened.

“But it is just six seats out of 82 seats and we’re also having a three-cornered fight with PAS. From now on let’s just concentrate on the election.”
