Otai Reformis 1998 leader Ronnie Liu said the group had met EU ambassadors to seek advice on releasing Anwar.
“At least let him leave the country to receive medical treatment. He could go to the United States or somewhere else that he feels comfortable in,” Liu told reporters at Menara Tan & Tan in Kuala Lumpur today.
He pointed out that many countries, aside from the EU, have spoken out on the situation.
“We have also asked the EU to let us (Otai Reformis 1998 and other NGOs) present our case on Anwar to the world community at conventions or the human rights congress in EU. Even though there has been no commitment, I think they have taken our request seriously.
“Many countries have spoken out and showed their support for Anwar, but Najib’s administration is too thick-skinned. I urge (Prime Minister) Najib (Razak) and (Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi) to respect our request to at least give medical treatment to Anwar,” Liu said.
Also present was PKR’s Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leung, who echoed Liu’s sentiments and said they would continue campaigning for the release of Anwar.
“The EU today had representatives from Germany and the United Kingdom. They expressed their concern over the country’s political state,” Gooi said.
G. Manivannan (PKR-Kapar) said the panel of doctors must be changed in order for Anwar to receive proper medical treatment.
He explained that the current panel of doctors was led by a doctor who was being advised by the Health Ministry.
“As long as the leader doesn’t change, the medical advises will never change. I have brought this issue up in Parliament a couple times. This is vital in order for Anwar to receive proper medical treatment.”
Anwar, 68, is now serving his jail term in Sungai Buloh Prison after being convicted for sodomy.
