Anwar: Don’t let elite decide nation’s future

The jailed politician sees faults in the Citizens' Declaration.

PETALING JAYA: Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim today criticised the Save Malaysia movement’s Citizens’ Declaration as inadequate, saying it does not give enough emphasis to institutional reforms and the empowerment of the people.

Speaking to reporters outside the Jalan Duta court, Anwar said it wasn’t enough to call only for the ouster of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“You cannot have this game of the elite trying to determine the course of the nation,” he said. “It must be the people’s democratic choice. So, back to democracy and institutional governance. That seemed to be lacking in the declaration.”

He said the judiciary and the Election Commission were among the institutions that needed to be reformed.

Asked who he thought should replace Najib, he said, “That’s for the people to decide, not Umno. There must be a fair democratic election.”

Yesterday, civic leaders and politicians of different persuasions gathered at what they described as a “People’s Congress” to reinforce their call for Najib to step down.
