PUTRAJAYA:
Health Minister Dr S. Subramaniam is leaving it to the authorities to investigate alleged abuse of a welfare fund for chronic patients and the poor by several individuals.

He said Director-General of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had informed him Tuesday on the arrest of several individuals related to the abuse of the fund amounting to more than RM20 million.

“The ministry has certain criteria on how to use the money raised through the special fund.

“But if the people trusted have been abusing it, it is up to the relevant parties to investigate.”

He was speaking after handing over Tamil literature books for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination to school representatives here today.

It was reported that four people, including a woman with the title of “Datuk”, were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the alleged abuse of the fund.

In another development, Dr Subramaniam said the full report on the case of pupils of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Ladang Nigel Gardner, Hulu Selangor, who ate a breakfast of fried noodles believed to be tainted with glass shards, would be known next week.

“All the pupils have been allowed to go home. The ministry, together with the Ministry of Education, is still investigating the case. We have to make a policy decision on the quality of cooking.”

On the literature books, Dr Subramaniam, who is also MIC president, said each year, 2,300 SPM students would receive the books for free.

“The cost of the books is RM200,000 and borne entirely by me.”
