KUALA LUMPUR: Various parties have established a fund to help Parti Amanah Negara President Mohamad Sabu avoid bankruptcy for failure to settle the compensation that the High Court ordered him to pay to former Election Commission deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Omar.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Amanah Secretary-General Anuar Tahir said the Mat Sabu Solidarity Fund was established by groups outside of Amanah and was believed to be a spontaneous effort by his supporters.

Last August, the Federal Court maintained the decision of the Appeals Court, which affirmed the High Court’s March 2014 decision that Mat Sabu and former PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali had defamed Wan Ahmad. They were ordered to pay RM200,000 in compensation before August this year.

“If Mat Sabu is unable to pay, he will be declared a bankrupt and forced to resign from all of his posts in any establishment, including political parties,” said Anuar.

“We wish to express our sincere gratitude to those who have come forward in our President’s time of need.”

Anuar urged those who had and were planning to raise funds for Mat Sabu to contact Amanah so that their efforts could be streamlined and made transparent.
