Expressing his thoughts in the Cheras Umno blog, Syed Ali passed this remark when commenting on the decision by the PAS Syura Council to reject any form of alliance with Umno, an offer made by the party’s president, Prime Minister Najib Razak, during its recent general assembly.
“Today, it is clear to the Malays in this country that it is PAS who is reluctant to cooperate with Umno. They are opportunists who are only concerned with their political agenda,” Syed Ali said.
He alleged that their rejection of Umno proved in no uncertain terms that PAS had never been sincere in bringing Malay-Muslim solidarity in politics to fruition. “Obviously, they do not have the will to bring about the unification of the ‘umat’ based on the future interests of the Malays,” he said.
However, Syed Ali, who is also Federal Territory Umno liaison bureau secretary, suggested PAS discuss the matter informally with Umno first before arriving at any final decision and said he hoped the Islamist party would reconsider its snub.
He said, however, that should PAS stick to its earlier decision, Umno would respect it and would not beg.
“We respect PAS’ decision, but it should be noted that Umno is the largest party representing the Malays and we are still able to form a dynamic government via the BN (Barisan Nasional) coalition,” he stressed.
