Located approximately 40km from the Kuala Lumpur city centre, the town – one of the oldest in Malaysia – is undeniably rich in history. But it is also a haven for great eats. Here are some of FMT’s picks for a day in Klang.
Breakfast at IV Restaurant and Chong Kok Kopitiam

Kickstart your adventure at IV Restaurant, famed for its roti canai. Served hot from the pan, the roti canai here is crispy with a flaky texture.
There’s also roti banjir, roti telur, roti bawang, and roti planta to choose from, as well as thosai, idli, chapati, and nasi lemak. What more can one ask for? End your meal with some milky ginger tea for a satisfying breakfast.

Alternatively, head over to Chong Kok Kopitiam. This coffee shop, over eight decades old, is well-known for their charcoal-grilled toast served with kaya and butter, creamy soft-boiled eggs, and thick Hainanese coffee.
Their in-house Hainanese kaya is made by caramelising sugar over a hot bed of charcoal, then pounding and stirring the mixture once the other ingredients are added, until a silky, rich and smooth texture is achieved.

Tea at Amachi’s Chai and Warung Pak Din

Amachi’s Chai is a hidden gem in Klang. Over here, there are over 10 flavours of tea – cinnamon, pandan, jasmine, rosemary, turmeric, peppermint, ginger, and betel leaf.
There are at least four flavours available daily. Choose the smaller cup at RM2 or the larger cup served in a little claypot at RM4.
For snacks, try the hot samosas, biscuits, or “vada pav”, a potato patty layered with mint and tamarind sauce and tucked between a soft bun.

Wish to extend your teatime? Head over to Warung Pak Din then for a variety of “kuih-muih” such as curry puffs, “onde-onde”, “goreng pisang” and more!
Also ask for their salty, piping hot keropok lekor. These don’t have too fishy a smell, making it rather delightful and addictive. And for drinks, order a hot cup of “Nescafe tarik”. Now that’s a great pick-me-up.

Dinner at Kee Heong Restaurant and Seri Melayu Heritage Restaurant

One of Klang’s claims to culinary fame is bah kut teh, such as the one at Kee Heong Restaurant. Fun fact: It is said that this eatery has a history that dates all the way back to the 1940s.
There are two types bah kut teh here: the traditional soup and the “dry” versions – where the meat is stir-fried with dried chilli and okra.
The former is delectable, with a thick and flavourful broth perfect for a cold day (or any day, really) while the latter is just as tasty.

If you’re hankering for some scrumptious Malay cuisine, Seri Melayu Heritage Restaurant is just the spot.

Also popular is the ayam penyet, pulut kuning served with curry chicken and roti jala with curry chicken and a boiled egg. You can also enjoy gulai lemak daging salai, nasi ulam, and nasi lemak and a host of Chinese-style dishes as well.
