Noodle delights: the best mee Jawa and Maggi goreng in PJ and KL

These stalls in Damansara Kim and KLCC, respectively, are must-trys for those who are hankering for a good noodle-based meal.

Looking for some simple but scrumptious noodle dishes for your next meal? Check out these offerings – one in Petaling Jaya, and the other right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city.

One of the most underrated classic hawker dishes from Penang is mee Jawa. Some might not have even heard of it or – a bigger travesty! – confuse this unique dish with mee rebus.

Mee Jawa consists of noodles served with a tangy, tomato-based sauce, and the one at Restoran Wan Shoon in Damansara Kim is heads above its (scarce) competitors.

The stall here is manned by a Penang couple, and their mee Jawa comes with the usual suspects: prawn crackers, fish cake, bean sprouts, hard-boiled egg, tofu, shredded lettuce, and sambal, complete with their signature gravy.

Overall, it will likely be the prettiest plate of mee Jawa from a hawker stall you’ll ever see! It also passes the taste test with flying colours: one visit and this will likely end up being your favourite mee Jawa joint in the Klang Valley.

They also serve a mean prawn mee at this stall, so do give it a try, too!

Meanwhile…

Maggi goreng is as Malaysian a dish as Ramli burger and roti canai, a staple you can find at any 24-hour mamak restaurant.

Well, those in the heart of the city should definitely head to Hameed’s at the second-level food court in KLCC for some of the best mee goreng you’ll ever taste – possibly even better than the version you cook yourself.

Hameed’s offers mee goreng with side dishes such as fried chicken, but you can’t beat the Maggi noodles on its own with a bit of veggies, some cucur udang and cili padi, and a side of lime for that acidic kick.

The result is a meal that will jolt your senses – rich, tangy, spicy, and absolutely mouthwatering – and even make the “memorable” trip to the loo the next morning well worth it!

Mmmm… hot, spicy goodness at Hameed’s. (KY Speaks pics)
