PETALING JAYA:
Of the many culinary treasures in Penang, the humble nasi kandar is among the most sought. It isn’t uncommon for Malaysians, and even folks from Singapore, to make the journey all the way there just to have a taste of this heavenly cuisine.

Naturally, numerous attempts have been made to bring nasi kandar out of its island home, with such restaurants aplenty in the Klang Valley. Often, though, these options are not up to par, or cost a pretty penny, or both.

Well, good news: if you have a hankering for hot and spicy curry, fragrant rice, and an assortment of yummy sides but are unwilling to commute 355km northward, one eatery in the heart of Puchong just might offer what you seek.

Kok Siong Nasi Kandar Penang is tucked away in the corner of an unassuming kopitiam that also bears its name. Upon walking in, the inevitable line of hungry customers at the stall during lunchtimes provides a good indicator of its popularity.

And as you await your turn to have a pick of the goodies, a quick glance at those seated around you will reveal most of them are, indeed, chowing down on nasi kandar. Don’t stare too long, though, as the line moves quickly and you will find yourself ready to order in no time at all!

So what’s up for grabs? One could say the range here is limited compared with other nasi kandar outlets out there, but a large variety doesn’t always guarantee deliciousness across the board.

Here, at least, you will find your mouth watering with tantalising platters of mutton, fried chicken, squid, fish, and other variations of chicken ready for the taking.

Feel free to order more than one item, of course – having mutton and ayam goreng on the same plate is never a bad move! – but be aware that each addition of protein will jack up the price accordingly.

You are also free to add side dishes such as salted eggs, and have your rice drenched with as much hot and spicy curry as you desire. Each plate, regardless of what you choose, will be topped with a portion of veggies and crunchy pappadam.

Most diners seem content with drowning their rice in a combination of all available gravies, resulting in a delicious golden mess. The ayam goreng seems to be a hit with customers, with kitchen staff bringing out new batches of freshly fried fowl every so often.

But enough about the ordering process – what does Kok Siong’s nasi kandar taste like and, more importantly, is it worth it?

The curries have rich and distinctive flavours, each certain to give your meal the spicy oomph it needs.

The stall is manned by one Mr Tee, recognisable by his trademark bandana – a proud Penang boy whose family has been running the business since 2001. He is generous with portions, and you are assured of a truly tummy-filling meal.

One bite into the fried chicken and you will hear the crunch that gives away just how good it is – it beats certain fast food chains, that’s for sure!

The mutton is also nothing to scoff at, though you will certainly scoff it down! Juicy and tender with more than enough meat to satisfy, and without all those pesky bones that feature in similar fare at many other restaurants.

All in all, if you are in the Klang Valley and are looking for nasi kandar that packs a punch, head on over to Kok Siong and give it a try.

At RM25 for this writer’s meal, one could argue it’s expensive or reasonable, depending on your perspective, but the taste certainly makes up for the price tag.
