Authentic Penang prawn mee in Kota Kinabalu

Jin Siang kopitiam serves a decent serving of prawn noodles if, for some reason, you're craving Penang food in Sabah.

If you’re in Kota Kinabalu and, for some reason, are craving Penang hawker food, Jin Siang kopitiam in Luyang serves a competent bowl of Penang-style prawn mee… plus a surprise option!

Jin Siang is located at Luyang Commercial Centre, about 5km away from KK town centre. The prawn mee here tastes very similar to what is served in Penang; the soup is fragrant, the noodles well-cooked, and the ingredients plentiful.

The sambal could perhaps be improved a bit, but overall it would certainly satisfy anyone’s cravings, being more than 1,700km away from the island of origin.

This pleasant kopitiam also serves something more unusual – fried prawn mee! This is probably not a dish you would find in Penang or even Kuala Lumpur.

True to its name, it contains all the ingredients of the soup variety but is fried, creating a semi-dry dish that’s rich with the flavour of prawn stock but without the soup.

It’s definitely worth a try if you are looking for something unique – that is, if you have grown tired of Sabah’s homegrown dishes such as tuaran mee.
