This is the go-to spot when you want a hearty plate of chicken cooked just right – tender, juicy and favourful.

Some of the most famous dishes in Ipoh involve chicken – probably because this protein is so versatile and easy to work with.

So, it’s not surprising that when in Ipoh, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

If you’re craving for a plate of chicken rice, head to Pak Kong, but if it’s kai si hor fun you can lunch at Thean Chun instead.

The honey chicken wings at Menglembu are to die for, and the salt-baked chicken at Aun Kheng Lim has a herbal undertone that makes it unique and delicious.

Well, to add to this list of fascinating chicken dishes is the chicken hor fun with bean sprouts at Restaurant Cowan Street that locals stream to when they want a hearty meal.

Restoran Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau is the full name of this restaurant, and despite the name, it is located at Jalan Raja Ekram in Ipoh New Town, a stone’s throw away from other popular eateries such as Ming Court dim sum.

This restaurant has a reputation of observing erratic operating hours, and has three rest days per week.

You can have dinner here from 6pm-9:30pm, but do call ahead and check if they’re opened to avoid disappointment.

For this particular meal, there was chicken for two, a plate of bean sprouts (always a must), chicken feet, and a plate of chicken offal to go with two bowls of hor fun. There’s no rice served at Cowan Street.

The orders were taken very quickly, and the service was even quicker – it took all of two minutes before everything was served – that’s rather impressive.

The review of the food served here is rather simple – everything was absolutely on point!

The chicken was cooked just right – smooth, flavourful, and absolutely delicious. The bean sprouts did not disappoint, and even the chicken feet and chicken offal were all just spot on.

The texture of the meat was outstanding – soft and tender – whether it was the innards, breast meat or thigh pieces.

This contrasted well with the crunch of the bean sprouts, making the meal here satisfying except that the dishes are a little on the salty side, but they do balance out well when enjoyed with the hor fun.

The total cost of dinner was RM45 inclusive of two drinks, perhaps a little pricey for some. Well, high quality does come at a price.
