While kai si hor fun is perhaps the most popular dish for breakfast in Ipoh, when the sun goes down, beansprout chicken – served with rice or noodles – takes over.
If you happen to find yourself in Perak’s charming capital city, one place you should check out for authentic beansprout chicken is a hawker stall known as Yoon Kee, which has been in business now for well over 20 years.
The stall was previously located under some trees nearby but is now a popular mainstay of the municipal food court known as Medan Selera Stadium, serving up dinner for mostly local crowds.
On the menu there’s chicken rice, chicken with hor fun soup, prawn mee, dry curry mee and, of course, beansprouts. Not listed on the menu is chicken innards, which you can pair with the more traditional poached chicken.

For three adults, you can’t go wrong with two plates of rice, a bowl of hor fun (kuey teow), and half a chicken – plus a serving of chicken innards on a bed of beansprouts, if this is up your alley.
So what’s the verdict? The chicken is juicy and smooth, wholly enjoyable, though perhaps not at the level of Cowan Street.
The innards, which includes liver, gizzards and intestines, are superb: crunchy and chewy with the right mouthfeel. Fans of this acquired taste are bound to enjoy it.
Of course, the beansprouts are fat and juicy – as good as any Ipoh has to offer.

While the rice is tasty and fragrant, it’s the hor fun that leaves an impression: silky smooth with a soup base that’s packed with so much flavour, you would enjoy it entirely on its own. Definitely worth ordering more of it next time!
