Enjoy Ah Tiong’s authentic ‘kai si hor fun’ in Pasir Pinji, Perak

Located at Weng Fatt Kopitiam, this stall does brisk business serving small but well-balanced portions of an Ipoh favourite.

In Ipoh, “kai si hor fun” is among the dishes that reign supreme. When it comes to this delicious noodle dish with shredded chicken, the No. 1 indicator of quality is usually the age of the shop/stall, and perhaps the age of the owner/operator as well.

With this in mind, Ah Tiong Kai Si Hor Fun at Weng Fatt Kopitiam checks the boxes.

Located in Pasir Pinji, a short distance away from the famous Choong Kee “Big Tree” Yong Tau Foo, this kopitiam houses a few stalls – but Ah Tiong tends to be the busiest. Notably, the stall can sell out as early as 10.15am on a weekday!

There’s also a bit of a wait time, as you might expect. Indeed, this writer had to wait for over 15 minutes for his food, which is perfectly acceptable as the old man was managing as fast as he could cope, with two younger guys helping him.

A bowl of kai si hor fun here costs RM7 and comes with a soup base that is flavourful without being overly thick.A thin layer of prawn oil floats on the surface, and there’s prawns, smooth poached chicken, chives, fried shallots and, of course, thin, silky kuey teow.

The serving is pretty small but oh so satisfying – certainly one of the most well-balanced bowls of kai si hor fun you would ever try.

Oh, and the kopi O here is thick and intense, too!
