PETALING JAYA:
It’s International Waffle Day today! Wait, that’s a thing? Yes, indeed!

From syrup-drenched American waffles to the thick Belgian variety, and even the quirky Hong Kong egg waffles, this treat comes in all shapes and sizes.

But it’s the divots that make them truly special – perfect for catching all that syrup, Nutella, or whatever sweet goodness you fancy.

Now, how did International Waffle Day even come about? The holiday traces its origins back to Sweden, where “Våffeldagen” (Waffle Day) sounds suspiciously like “Vårfrudagen” (Our Lady’s Day), a Christian holiday on March 25.

Over time, as language evolved and pronunciations blurred, Swedes began associating the day with waffles. And just like that, a religious occasion transformed into an excuse to indulge in golden, crispy goodness.

Though it started in Scandinavia, Waffle Day has since gone global. And even Malaysians have their own nostalgic connection to waffles – whether it’s the classic A&W waffles or the iconic ones from Nelson’s that have been around since 1985.

So, this Waffle Day, why not skip the fancy café and opt for gourmet waffles delivered straight to your doorstep. Rara’s Ville is a home-based online waffle business in Damansara that has been winning fans over since 2022.

FMT Lifestyle caught up with Aznur Nadiyah, the woman behind the waffles, recently.

“My love for waffles started at a young age,” the 42-year-old shared. “Even now, when I see waffles being sold, I have to get one.”

Despite her love for all things sweet and pink (just take a look at the packaging), she worked as a banker for years before resigning in 2016.

“After I had my child, I wanted to do something again. I even tried property, but that didn’t work out. Then, I bought over a restaurant in Kota Damansara that was selling waffles.”

Unfortunately, the restaurant venture didn’t pan out as hoped. But Aznur had a lightbulb moment – why not make waffles from home? And so, in 2022, Rara’s Ville was born.

“The name comes from my son and daughter’s names – Rafanda and Rayed. So, Rara’s Ville!” she explained. In fact, she shared that her children have a waffle at least once a week!

“The best waffle isn’t too crispy or too soft – it has to be just right. Our bestseller is the chocolate and peanut combo,” she said.

FMT Lifestyle got a behind-the-scenes peek at her kitchen, and truth be told, the aroma alone is enough to make one weak in the knees.

Aznur works with chilled waffle batter, prepped in advance to achieve that perfect texture. And this isn’t just any dinky waffle maker – Aznur uses an industrial-grade machine, that ensures even cooking and a consistent golden-brown crunch.

In just four minutes, the batter oozes out, forming the perfect waffle. No timers needed – Aznur relies purely on intuition. Once done, the waffles rest for a bit before getting slathered with a generous spread. “And I don’t skimp!” she declared.

And FMT Lifestyle can vouch for that – her Nutella layer is no mere drizzle.

Rara’s Ville offers a variety of flavours, including red velvet waffles stuffed with Nutella, as well as options featuring Biscoff, strawberry jam, blueberry, and more.

And if you’re more of a pancake person, no worries – she uses the same batter to make fluffy pancakes, stacked up neatly with a slab of premium butter and pure maple syrup.

Each order comes in sustainable carton boxes, topped off with a little extra love – a colourful marshmallow tucked inside every box.

Imagine receiving a marshmallow when a sugar craving hits. Yum!

FMT Lifestyle gave the waffles a try, and let’s just say – it’s dangerously addictive.

The waffles strike the perfect balance between crispy and soft, never too thick or heavy. It’s one of those treats you can keep eating without realising you’ve just inhaled three.

Beyond sweet treats, Aznur also offers homemade chicken pies, made by her elderly neighbour – now that’s community spirit!

With waffles this good, it’d be no surprise if Rara’s Ville becomes a household name before the next International Waffle Day rolls around!
