It causes itchy, inflamed skin and can lead to significant disruptions in daily life, from sleep disturbances to emotional stress.
The two treatments, Cibinqo and Staquis, cater to different stages of the condition, providing patients with more options to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Staquis: Topical treatment for children and adults
Staquis is a topical treatment suitable for patients as young as three months old.
Unlike traditional steroid-based creams, Staquis uses a steroid-free formula that targets phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme linked to inflammation.
Clinical trials have shown that when applied twice daily, Staquis can improve skin clarity within 29 days for individuals aged two years and above.
Cibinqo: Oral medication for moderate-to-severe cases
Cibinqo is an oral medication designed for patients aged 12 and above who suffer from moderate-to-severe eczema, and who have not responded well to topical treatments.
It works by inhibiting Janus kinase 1 (JAK1), an enzyme associated with inflammation, to reduce itching and irritation.
Clinical trials have demonstrated significant improvements in symptoms within 12 weeks of use, with relief sustained for up to 48 weeks.
Eczema’s impact beyond the skin
Living with eczema can be challenging, as the condition affects more than just the skin. It can take a toll on mental health, social interactions and daily routines.
Dr Tan Wooi Chiang, president of Persatuan Dermatology Malaysia, explained that while eczema symptoms typically manifest on the skin’s surface, the root cause lies in inflammation beneath the skin.
“Beyond physical symptoms, patients may experience emotional, social, and psychological impacts,” he said. Tan also urged individuals to seek timely medical intervention to receive tailored solutions for managing the disease effectively.
Deborah Seifert, Pfizer’s cluster lead for Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines, expressed hope for advancements in eczema treatment.
“We hope to offer relief and support to individuals affected by this debilitating disease by elevating the treatment landscape with these promising therapies,” she said.
