Owned by Teng Wai Keong, fondly known as Gary, YODmilk.Shop serves up a unique breakfast experience that combines quality, affordability, and a touch of local flavour.
Speaking with FMT Lifestyle, Gary said he wanted to set-up a “breakfast shop” as there aren’t any shops like his in the area of Taipan.
“We want people in the neighbourhood to come over. We get to know each other. We greet each other. We remember all their names. That is a very beautiful thing that can happen to a breakfast shop,” he said, adding that it was more about community and customer relationships.
There are three types of bagels here: original, cranberry, and cocoa.
These can be paired with six varieties of savoury cream cheese fillings such as smoked chicken or spring onion. There are also 11 varieties of sweet cream cheese fillings, which includes strawberry and adzuki bean.
In addition to bagels and coffee, you can also sip on matcha latte, hojicha latte, and avocado milk, the best-seller here.
There is also a selection of homemade ice creams with unique local flavours such as Ubat Batuk Cap Ibu dan Anak, durian, matcha, and mango, providing a sweet finish to a satisfying meal.
What makes this little shop even more amazing is the affordability of his bagels and drinks!
Gary’s commitment to keeping prices low stems from his own experience as an avid coffee drinker when he was an electrical engineer.
Frustrated by the high cost of an Americano, Gary vowed to make coffee affordable if he ever opened his own cafe.
“After so many years, I really did open a café. I introduced the coffee taste that I like at a very affordable price so that everybody, especially the working class, can afford good coffee every morning,” Gary explained, extending this philosophy to the entire menu.
Another standout aspect of this shop is the bagels themselves. Unlike other bagels, which are hard and chewy, Gary’s offers a local twist.
“We do it differently. We make it crispy outside and soft inside,” he said, stressing that this is how Malaysians prefer their bagels.
While the brick-and-mortar store only opened last November, the idea of YODmilk.Shop was hatched during the pandemic, when Gary started making fruity fresh milk at home using real fruits.
Soon he made an online business out of this passion and was beside himself with joy when sales were through the roof. Before long, he had to rent a shop in SS19 to store the items for his business.
After two years of online success, Gary shifted his focus to retail sales, recognising that people preferred the experience of dining in. And so, YODmilk.Shop came into existence.
The compact and cosy shop is adorned with Japanese-inspired décor, including izakaya-style curtains, posters of Doraemon and other cartoon characters, and cute video game music playing in the background.
There are only six chairs and three tables, which means many wait in line for their orders. Despite this, the community clearly loves YODmilk.Shop.
“Taipan people love us because we sell things at very affordable pricing. They love our bagels, they love our idea, they love to come here,” Gary said.
To ensure you don’t miss out on their delicious offerings, it’s best to come early. “If the bagels sell out, the shop closes early,” Gary said.
“I wouldn’t say our bagel is the best in the market, but definitely it is something you must try because not many shops make it this way,” Gary concluded.
