The internet is filled with recommendations on new and fancy food places. While these are great and exciting, there’s always something nice about old-school establishments that truly stand the test of time.
Gerai Nasi Eng Kee is a stall/shack that has been operating for decades by the old cinema now known as Lotus Five Star (which specialises mostly in Indian movies) in Kawasan 15, Klang, Selangor.
Expect a zinc roof, old plastic tables and chairs, and sweltering heat in the daytime when it’s not raining. This might sound uncomfortable but, thankfully, the food more than makes up for any inconveniences you have to endure.

The menu consists of a little over a dozen dishes, roughly half of which are noodles, and the remaining rice offerings.
The oyster sauce roast pork rice (RM9) is exactly as it sounds: roast pork with an oyster-based sauce that drenches the plate of steamed rice, with a small serving of vegetable to complete the dish.
Served with a side of pickled green chilli, the ingredients come together well to create a simple but satisfying meal.

The tofu rice (RM9) is another homestyle dish worth trying. It’s similarly drenched in sauce, but this time it will remind you of what you can get from a good plate of “wat tan hor”.
Tofu, pork, carrot and other veggies are served with an egg-drop sauce that ties everything together quite nicely.
This writer is looking forward to trying their noodle dishes next, but don’t wait for a review – why not head over to Gerai Nasi Eng Kee and try their fare for yourselves?
