Khoo roped in her petite daughter to model some of her clothes. “It was fun and nice to be able to try new clothes every new season,” Koh, 25, told FMT Lifestyle.
Years passed and in June 2020, Koh joined the business as a marketing executive. It was a timely move as the pandemic made the business’ online presence more important than ever.
“As I am not a parent, I read up on parenting and motherhood related topics. This helped me understand the market trends and insights better,” she recalled.
Post-pandemic, Koh, now an assistant branding and marketing manager, is very much enjoying her days at Mellow.
The name “Mellow”, Koh said, was chosen because it literally means soft. It also paints an image of something pleasant and comfortable – apt descriptions when one looks at their products.
These include comfortable sleepwear made from 90% cotton and 10% spandex. Available in sizes XS to XXXL, Koh shared that some are manufactured locally, the others in China. The sleepwear is suitable for those aged seven to 15 – or older if you have a petite frame!
The rompers! These are hard not to gush over as they are truly adorable. Suitable for newborn babies and those up to 24 months old, they are made from 99% cotton and manufactured in China.
Additionally, Mellow also offers rompers made from 95% organic bamboo. Delightfully soft, these are perfect for newborns. Parents can also personalise them with their baby’s name or initials.
They also have a range of accessories such as bibs, socks, mittens, booties, caps and headbands. These are suitable for babies under 24 months – after all, dressing up shouldn’t only be for adults!
Then, there are the plush toys. According to Koh, when it comes to these toys sourced from China, little details are important. These include ensuring parts of the toys such as the eyes do not detach easily to ensure the safety of the children playing with them. Other products include jackets and leggings for children as well as gift sets.
Spreading the joy of Mellow
For the team, a milestone was reached when they were awarded the Readers’ Choice Award 2021 in the “Best Baby and Children’s Pyjamas” category by BabyTalk, a local parenting platform.
According to Koh, among the positive feedback they received includes the wide range of sizes available – and of course, the comfortable material used.
For the future, Koh said that they plan to introduce a matching set of pajamas for the whole family. “It would be fun to have a family night in and have the same sleepwear.”
In their continuous efforts to spread the joy of Mellow products, Koh said she was appreciative of the support of Persatuan Pembangunan Artisans (PPA), an NGO that assists local artisans to expand their distribution channel through its online platform, physical stores and pop-up events.
Looking back, Koh said that among her best memories were meeting new parents and listening to their feedback. “It was nice being able to leave a lasting positive impression on our customers,” she mused.
“I also hope that we can further grow beyond Malaysia and to Southeast Asia,” she added.
