SHAH ALAM:
A hijab that lights up, a “smoking” dress that emits a fog on demand, an interactive mural that plays music with the tap of a finger – these are just some of the many quirky creations on display at Aiszzy Electronics, Malaysia’s first female-led electronics store.

Operating in Seksyen 7, Shah Alam for the past 10 years, Aiszzy Electronics is led by Ts Nur ‘Aqilah Zainuddin, the founder and CEO behind the company.

And no, she’s no Tan Sri, the letters Ts refer to her profession as a “technologist” instead.

Aiszzy Electronics has appeared in the media a few times, and FMT Lifestyle caught up with her recently to learn more about her fascinating passion.

“When I was younger, I was a very creative person. I never saw myself becoming an engineer,” she admitted.

Fun fact: Nur ‘Aqilah also holds a black belt in taekwondo and has competed at university level.

She considered a career in the arts and once even dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. But she opted to study electrical engineering instead, proudly following in her mother’s footsteps.

The 34-year-old shared that it was her final-year project – building a prosthetic hand – that ignited her passion for electronics.

“I was alone in the lab, and then suddenly, when I pressed the enter button, and the fingers moved, it was like Iron Man. I fell in love.”

In fact, it was while working on her projects that Nur ‘Aqilah saw the potential in running her own electronics resource store rather than travel far and wide each time she needed the resources for her projects. Having her own store would save her time and money, she reasoned.

Spotting the demand for such a store in Shah Alam, she started the company from home and before she knew it, she was launching Aiszzy Electronics in April 2016. It has now become a go-to spot for hobbyists and professionals alike.

Her store stocks everything from sensors and development boards to 3D printing supplies and beginner kits.

“My advice to the young ladies out there: if you’re interested in electronics, go for it and don’t be shy. I know it’s a male-dominated field, and people might say you’ll be insignificant. But passion doesn’t recognise gender and you don’t need to be a genius or an engineer to get started,” she said.

Today, she works with a team of around 10 people, all from different backgrounds. Together, they create custom projects, such as high-tech stage wear for local artistes, which often puts them in the spotlight.

Aiszzy Electronics is best known for their collaborations with local singer Aina Abdul – one of the company’s major breakthroughs.

In 2023, in collaboration with designer Zaimi Zulkafli, they created a specialised “smoking” garment that emitted fog on cue during the singer’s concert performances.

For Aina’s appearance at Anugerah Juara Lagu 38 in 2024, Nur ‘Aqilah and her team developed a “Moving Roots” system using animatronics, making the tree roots on the singer’s gown appear to move.

“Fashion technology was still rather new in Malaysia, so it was quite nerve-wracking,” she recalled. “When the singer wore the costume and it started lighting up in front of thousands of people, it made me cry.”

Having operated the store for 10 years, Nur ‘Aqilah recently launched Aiszzy Academy, offering training and hands-on learning programmes for the curious-minded.

“We also provide consultation for projects to help troubleshoot or bring ideas to life,” she shared. “I want to support the students around here – not just by providing materials, but by helping them with their projects.”

Next, she’s got her sights set on launching Aiszzy College to inspire the next generation of innovators.
