For many, the quest for happiness and contentment is difficult, especially given that the demands of everyday life can feel chaotic and overwhelming.

Ultimately, humans yearn for lasting joy and contentment in life. But rather than looking within, people tend to seek exterior accomplishments, validation and possessions in the hope that these will satisfy.

With this in mind, here are four broad principles that could guide you towards a greater sense of happiness. Check back in tomorrow for part two of this article, which will provide three slightly more unconventional approaches towards fulfilment.

1. Build strong relationships

Happiness relies heavily on positive social interactions. According to research, people with strong relationships tend to live longer, and more happily and healthily.

So, how do we establish solid bonds? Crucially, there must be open lines of communication, which means being permitted to express what’s on one’s mind, as well as being able to listen to what others say.

It’s also important to cultivate networks of support. Relationships can be strengthened by being present and spending time with friends, family, and other loved ones.

Regularly checking in on people and letting them know you’re thinking about them is a solid approach to maintaining relationships. Yes, building strong bonds can be hard work, but the payoff is immense.

2. Embrace gratitude

Practising gratitude can lead to increased feelings of joy and fulfilment. By intentionally reorienting our attention to good things in life and being thankful for them, it allows us to see the richness around us.

Journaling, creating rituals, going on “gratitude walks” in nature, sending meaningful letters or notes of appreciation, and looking for the silver lining during times of adversity are all ways of cultivating an attitude of thankfulness.

Gratitude retrains our brains to look for the good in all circumstances. In turn, this makes it easier to appreciate the little things in life, forge stronger bonds with others, deal with stress better, and improve our general health and happiness.

3. Don’t deny the power of positive thinking

“Think positive!” It might be a cliché, but there is scientific evidence that positive thinking can influence happiness.

Optimism – the expectation of positive outcomes – is an outlook that can be developed. Looking at failures as temporary and specific, rather than permanent setbacks, cultivates resilience and a growth mindset.

Similarly, reframing negative experiences by looking for silver linings helps individuals change their perspective on negative events.

These tools can help you to focus on positivity, leading to increased happiness and overall well-being.

4. Prioritise health and wellness

To be happy and fulfilled in the long term, you must prioritise taking care of your body and mind. Self-care means doing what you need to do for your mental and physical well-being, so you can flourish and live life to the fullest.

Prioritising health and fitness includes doing things like eating healthy, getting enough exercise and sleep, and scheduling annual checkups. The latter are an excellent way to keep tabs on your health and identify developing problems before they become serious.

Also, it’s crucial to keep up with prescribed medical treatments and recommendations. This may entail taking prescribed drugs as directed, participating in approved therapy, or making necessary adjustments to your way of life.

At the end of the day, you will have more control over your health and outcomes if you actively participate in your own treatment strategy.
