Whether you’re currently working or are about to graduate, you are likely wondering how to succeed in the “new normal”. After all, there are many unknowns about what the world will look like post-coronavirus.
Still, as work opportunities emerge, there are certain elements that will help you become a desirable candidate. A report by Deloitte Access Economics suggests that by 2030, two-thirds of jobs will be soft-skills-intensive, so developing the following traits will be key.
1. Flexibility and adaptability
Being flexible and adaptable is something Malaysians have had to get used to over the past two years. But it’s also a crucial skill that every employer will be keeping an eye out for.
More than just being able to work remotely, it’s about having an open mindset, working well under pressure, adjusting to new and unexpected deadlines, prioritising tasks and, in some instances, taking on additional responsibilities.
2. Critical thinking
A recent survey revealed 41% of Malaysian employers consider problem-solving and critical thinking to be lacking among candidates.
In an era where navigating fake news and contrasting data is a daily struggle, it’s critical to be able to think clearly and make informed decisions. Ask questions such as:
- What’s happening?
- Why is this important?
- Who is affected?
- Where did this info come from?
- Can I be certain about the source?
3. Leadership
Having good leadership skills is not strictly about supervising or managing others. It’s about communicating your strategy and vision, while encouraging others and embracing feedback from colleagues and superiors.
Being self-aware and holding yourself accountable is particularly important.

4. Tech-savviness
Even before the pandemic, the growing digital skills gap was apparent across businesses worldwide. In fact, 82% of job vacancies now require digital skills of some kind.
The current state of affairs has accelerated the need for digital skillsets to help businesses become more aligned with today’s technologies and platforms.
Although you are unlikely to need to know every system or platform, demonstrating a solid working knowledge of data literacy, computer programming, the Cloud, artificial intelligence, blockchain and more will catapult your profile above the rest.
5. Creativity and innovation
Human beings are unique in that they are able to think outside the box. This is essential across every industry and sector.
Creativity is not limited to typically artistic or creative professions – everyone should be able to tap into their creative mindset to steer a business through opportunities and challenges.
6. Communication and emotional intelligence
Communication and social intelligence go hand-in-hand as there is a need for genuine human connection in every workplace. To have good emotional intelligence is to be aware of, and demonstrate empathy for, the feelings and behaviours of others.
This is also where good communication skills are critical – as many continue to work from home, clarity in virtual correspondence is necessary for consistent productivity.
