KUALA LUMPUR:
It is an unmistakable fact that Malaysian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the region, drawing influences from many different cultures.

What is also a known fact is that many Malaysians do not practice a healthy diet, and this has led to growing cases of obesity within the country.

While it is easy to point out that the solution is to eat healthily, this can be quite a feat as healthy food is hard to come by and not to mention, expensive.

As such, if Malaysians are to change their diets for the better, a compromise has to be reached with the availability and price of such food.

And that’s exactly what Savor of Life hopes to accomplish; by bringing healthy food to Malaysian doorsteps without burning holes in people’s wallets.

A startup by Malaysians for Malaysians, Savor of Life provides a range of healthy meals that anyone within the Klang Valley can order and enjoy within the same day.

Of course, the idea of healthy food that most Malaysians have in their minds consists of an ungarnished salad that would not look appetising or filling at all.

But Savor of Life’s meal options run contrary to the common idea of healthy food, as they are just as tasty as they are healthy.

And, not only is everything on Savor of Life’s fully vegetarian menu halal, but they also have gluten-free options available and every single dish is made without GMOs.

A good introduction to what Savor of Life has cooked up is their Lentil Bolognese, a particularly popular spaghetti that tastes just as good as any meat-filled version.

Upon closer inspection, you may notice a yellow powder-like substance sprinkled onto the pasta. This is nutritional yeast, which is rich in B12 vitamins and tastes similar to cheese.

The lentil gravy is bound to surprise first-timers, with bits of lentils that can convincingly pass off as meat.

Mushrooms are quite a versatile and tasty source of food, and that is made crystal clear when you try Savor of Life’s Mush-Mush Rendang.

What appears to be a portion of chicken rendang is actually lion’s mane mushroom cooked in rendang, and while it is not meat by any means, it is certainly delicious in its own way.

The texture of the mushroom can be described as chewy, tender, and slightly juicy, with the distinct rendang taste infused within.

For something just as close to home, the Tofu Masak Tiga Rasa is worth a try, being a recent addition with the Raya season being around the corner.

With the combined flavours of sweet, sour and spicy, this vegetarian take on a Malaysian classic is a savoury delight that’s not to be missed.

Savor of Life’s Not Your Ordinary Chicken Rice is true to its name, as it takes the ordinary and beloved Malaysian chicken rice and puts a unique spin on it by swapping out the protein source with a suitable replacement.

Unless you take a closer look, you would be forgiven for mistaking the chicken rice to be just that — as the pieces of chicken are in fact pieces of tofu that are quite a filling alternative to poultry.

Be sure to pour out the provided chilli sauce onto the rice though; it was made in-house and adds quite a kick to the meal.

The Thai Panang Curry is a must-try for lovers of all things spice and nice as well, with a thicky and rich curry to go with the rice.

It also helps that it comes with a generous serving of mushrooms, eggplants and okra, adding to the already scrumptious meal.

Last but not least is the Vege Moussaka, a dish popular in the Balkans and the Middle East, which resembles an Italian lasagne.

Unlike the average lasagne though, the vegetarian variant of this low-calorie dish is the perfect meal for someone who is watching their weight.

And despite this being the case, it is also just as filling as any lasagne, with savoury tastes that you can relish with each helping.

Speaking to FMT, Savor of Life’s chief revenue officer Peter Lee said, “We aim to provide healthy living for Malaysians in a way that is affordable.”

And true enough, with meal options as cheap as RM8, Malaysians living within the Klang Valley can now opt to eat healthily without stepping out of the safety of their homes.

According to Lee, the meal options offered by Savor of Life are first carefully curated by nutritionists to ensure that they are wholesome, healthy and nutritious.

With plans to expand their operations in the near future, perhaps Malaysians of all stripes will be able to eat healthily wherever they are.
