Magical Narkanda, an ignored gem worthy of a visit

Close to Shimla, travellers often overlook the magic that is Narkanda

Narkanda is a town in Shimla district on the Hindustan-Tibet Road in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is set within a fir forest and during the winter it is a ski resort.

Narkanda is mainly visited as a night stop on the way to Spiti usually instead of a stop at Shimla. Narkanda is an ignored gem of Himachal Pradesh.

It is located 61 km away from Shimla, about a two-hour drive. It is much less crowded than Shimla, but has a large market and restaurants.

Where to stay

One needs to pre-book for a basic homestay with hot and cold water. However, accommodation can be found 1.5 km from the town without a booking.

If you’re booking at the last minute through booking.com, don’t have high expectations. But wherever you stay, the views from the balcony will most likely still be magnificent.

Where to eat

Negi Dhaba is famous for its local cuisine. But bear in mind that it closes at 9 pm, which is rather early especially when you’re on vacation. Most other restaurants close at 10 pm, so don’t be late.

Hatu Peak

Hatu peak is the place to visit at Narkanda. Most travellers only visit during the day for the view from the mountain and to see the temple. The ideal time to visit Hatu Peak is at sunset or sunrise, when the place turns magical.

The best time to visit the cherry plantations is in April and May while August to October is the best time to enjoy the apple orchards.

All mobile phone networks in the country are available here and there are ATMs in the market area to withdraw cash.

Even those not planning a visit to the Spiti belt should visit Narkanda. A weekend trip for two nights would be ideal at this quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of Shimla.
