Gorumara National Park in India is a hidden gem in its true sense. It is located in the northern region of West Bengal, but most Bengalis prefer the lure of hill stations such as Darjeeling or Gangtok. Even the West Bengal tourism board doesn’t do this beautiful location justice.
Gorumara is a medium-size national park famous for its tea gardens and the one-horned rhinos at the Gorumara Rhino Camp. The best time to visit is between November and March, when it is colder; the park is closed during the monsoon season from June to September.
To get there, fly into Bagdogra airport from any other part of India, or hop on an overnight train to New Jalpaiguri station, then get a cab to the town of Lataguri, where the park is located.
It will take you up to two hours to arrive, but the scenery during the drive is absolutely breathtaking. Lataguri is perfect for a staycation, though you should opt for a three-day visit to see it fully.
The Tuskers Den Forest Resort is highly recommended as it is comfortable with reasonable rates. The resort’s location directly across from the safari booking gate means you have easy access to nature and wildlife.
Food and activities
There are not a lot of eating options near Gorumara National Park; the safest bet would be to book a meal package at the venue you’re staying at.
There are also a few options in front of the safari gate that will not cost more than 100 rupees (about RM5.50) for a fish or chicken meal with vegetables, dhal, rice, roti and chutney.

Here are a few more highlights in and around the national park – some of which might require a bit of driving to get to, which is perfect for those who enjoy scenic road trips.
- Safari
Apart from Gorumara, Lataguri is home to many other national parks. Go on safari and check out the rhinos, leopards, gours, elephants, spotted deer and more.
The aforementioned Gorumara Rhino Camp is also worth a visit. Despite its name, the camp is home to various wildlife, which you can set your sights on from atop an elephant.
If you visit the Buxa National Park, located about 120km away from Gorumara, you just might spot (or stripe?) a tiger!
- Shopping
Handcrafted wooden items and bags are available in front of the Gorumara safari gate. The goods are of high quality and affordable, but – as is the norm when you’re on holiday – bargain!
- Tea plantations
There are many tea gardens and plantations that are perfect for a day visit or even an overnight stay, such as the Appu, Dharanipur, and Chengmari tea estates, to name just three.

- Cultural dances
Evening safaris often include snacks and tribal dances. The Santhal dance – known as one of the best tribal folk dances in India – is an event to look out for, and you can even join in.
- Murti River
The Murti River, located about 40 minutes away from Gorumara National Park, offers stunning sunset views, while the pebbled riverbank is the perfect spot for a picnic.
- Jayanti Mahakal Caves
The Jayanti Mahakal caves, about a three-hour drive away from Gorumara, are located near the banks of the Jayanti River, which is known for its white-pebble riverbed and gorgeous views. These caves are really popular and have even been featured in many movies.
Stay overnight in Jayanti during a full moon to experience the sky as you never have before!
