The third seeds were a pale shadow of themselves and gave away easy points, with the Malaysian duo’s errors making the young Indonesian pair look good.
Other Malaysian shuttlers knocked out in the opening rounds included top men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who were beaten 15-21, 21-9, 18-21 by Denmark’s world No 26 Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard.
Men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao and mixed doubles pairs Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien also lost to their respective opponents.
The Malaysians still in the running are mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man We Ching-Tee Kai Wun.
In the post-match interview, both Pearly and Thinaah said their mistake was playing to their rivals’ style and pace in the second and third games.
“That’s the main reason for our loss. We have to review our performance today and rectify our weaknesses and be ready for the Indian Open next week.
“We have to forget this loss, move on and regain our forms,” said Thinaah.
