Hazim’s family still obliged to help him

Cutting off the education funding of the atheist and gay student is not something those who claim to be pious should do.

The plight of Hazim Ismail, a Malaysian student in Canada who claims to have been abandoned by his family for coming out as a homosexual and atheist, has started gaining traction in the Malaysian and Canadian media.

Hazim claims that after he was outed by a cousin on social media, his family cut off the funding for his studies and he has to turn to crowdfunding to continue his studies.

Just like that, a bright young man’s future has been put in jeopardy by his own flesh and blood, no less.

It is a fact that homosexuals still face discrimination when seeking employment. This leaves them with few career options, often pushing them into vice trades.

In Hazim’s case, cutting off his education funding might eventually cause him to abandon his studies. Without proper education, he may find it even more difficult to get a job, exposing him to an even greater risk of involvement in vice and thus to more sins, if the issue is viewed through the religious lens.

If Hazim’s relatives are religious, they have an obligation to at least help him stay away from committing more sins.

Even if they do not approve of Hazim’s life choices, surely cutting him off is not a reasonable decision. By disowning those considered as deviants, people who claim to be religious deny themselves the chance to persuade the lost to return to the right path.

On top of that, if they persist with their decision to disown him, there is a possibility that Hazim will be resentful of religion, driving him further away from the possibility of returning to the fold.

If the family is actually concerned with Hazim’s future and salvation, it needs to continue funding his studies for now, at the very least, and take it from there.
